Mawarra Genetics

For more than 60 years, the Sykes family have been breeding Hereford cattle under the Mawarra Genetics name, with the Angus program established more recently to complement the operation.

Today, with properties at Longford and Traralgon East, Victoria, and Holbrook, New South Wales, Mawarra’s genetics are working in commercial herds across Australia and in 18 countries around the world.

Their Annual Bull Sale is held each March, with an inaugural Spring Bull Sale to be held in August 2026.

Mawarra has always believed they’re selling more than genetics. They’re helping producers make better breeding decisions for stronger businesses.

As Deanne explains:

"We believe our role goes beyond supplying genetics. We want to actively assist clients with forming breeding objectives and making strategic improvement decisions.".

That philosophy shapes everything they do.

Objective data matters.

So does experience.

As Deanne often says, the numbers help guide the decision, but they don’t replace the cattlemanship in the paddock. Structure, temperament, fertility and longevity still have to be assessed with a critical eye.

It’s why Mawarra has never chased individual traits or short-term trends. Instead, the focus has remained on breeding balanced cattle that consistently perform in commercial herds.

The next step was making sure their marketing reflected that direction.

Like many family businesses, there was never a shortage of stories to tell. There simply didn’t seem to be enough time to capture them all.

Client successes.

Breeding philosophy.

Educational content.

The care, thoughtfulness, cattlemanship and management behind their genetics.

International demand across 18 countries.

Beef Week.

Herefords Australia National.

On-property sales.

Media.

It all needed to work together.

Rather than simply promoting sale dates, Mawarra wanted to share what happens behind the scenes and help producers better understand how they select the right animals for their goals.

Rather than trying to find one standout animal, Mawarra’s message has become about consistency.

As Deanne explains:

"We don’t want people coming into Mawarra looking for one standout animal. We want to breed consistently good cattle, with performance that reflects in the paddock."

That philosophy now carries through everything the business shares, from educational events like the Red Meat Road Map, held in December 2025, to annual sale catalogues, client stories and day-to-day conversations with producers.

Since late 2025, Mallee Marketing has supported documenting that knowledge and building marketing systems and content to support Mawarra’s marketing efforts.

Together we've developed a long-term content strategy, strengthened their messaging, produced client stories and catalogue messaging, managed paid Meta advertising, regular email campaigns, CRM systems, social media management, sale campaigns and ongoing communications that reflect the depth of the Mawarra program.

That work has also been supported by a fantastic team around the business, including BJS Photography, studstocksales.com, designers, videographers, livestock agents and many other collaborators who each play an important role in presenting the Mawarra brand professionally and consistently.

Thank you to Deanne, Peter, the Sykes family and the whole Mawarra team for the great long term partnership we have.
